March Madness Road Trip Diary

Day 5: Kansas City, MO to Kingdom City, MO

  • 2 hour drive
  • 150 miles

Well, this was the day we stayed all the way out here for.  Our #13 La Salle Explorers vs #12 Ole Miss Rebels.  I haven’t seen Abby get this fired up against an opposing player before- she REALLY did not like Ole Miss’ controversial guard, Marshall Henderson.  Seems she read some non-flattering articles about his poor sportmanship and made up her own mind.  Me? I was just enjoying the facet of the game where prognosticator after prognosticator kept saying that Henderson rattled opponents by jawing and talking up a ‘street’ game.  Which may work well in SEC, but against a Big 5 team from North Philly?  Let’s just say I knew the game would be decided by actual play, not theatrics.

Kansas City was definitely snowed in, but started to show signs of life as game time approached.  After another fun Alumni Reception, we headed over to the College Basketball Experience/Hall of Fame next door to the arena for some history and fun.  We ran into the full compliment of the Glitter Bros, but in place of the Dan DeDestefano (who had soccer to coach today) we had the former Explorer mascot himself (and another friend). Tim Tilson joined Doug and Joe!  We watched Temple lose to Indiana and then headed inside for our game.

The Explorers took the close game into the final seconds, causing me to once again question if I should have a cardiologist on speed dial.  Then again, my family doctor was one row ahead of me with his son, so I gave into temptation and started yelling.  Another tight game over, with an Explorer upset!  SWEET SIXTEEN, BABY!!

Final Score: La Salle 76, Ole Miss 74

Round of 32? Check. Next Stop- SWEET SIXTEEN!

With the blizzard traveling east along I-70, we knew we had to put some distance towards home.  To my surprise, we actually got about two hours of driving in before the roads turned really bad.  We pulled off and slept for 6 hours before hitting the road again.
